Week 1 - March 17 - 18, 2011

Give the title, author, publisher, copyright date, genre (how do you know the genre - from the back of the book, the title page, the text?), a description of the cover of the book, and the main character(s) you have met so far and on what page you first met them.

The book I'm reading is"The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle,"by the author Avi,the publisher is the arrangement with Orchard books, New York. The copy right date was on 1990.The genre of my book is Adventure, I know this because the teacher told me that the genre was in the cover of the book in a little sticker ,she told me because I didn't know were to look for it.

The cover of my book has a girl who I'm pretty sure it is Charlotte Doyle who is wearing a blue dress. She is in a ship and I know this  because you can see it in the background. You could see she is staring out to nowhere and I think she is happy because she is kind of smiling.I think she is happy because she is living the time of her live sailing through the oceans. The cover also has the tittle ,with the letters color red.It also has a award for being a good book on top next to the tittle and it has a little  hook  in  the  top of  the  tittle and  it  said " A spellbinding tale of murder on the high seas". This hook made me more interested in the book.

Right now I have 4 main characters which are Charlotte Doyle who I met on p.7, Zachariah who I met on p.22, and Mr.Hollybrass the first mate and Jaggery the captain who I both met on page. 29. They are right now setting in chapter 5 where Charlotte and the captain are talking and Mr.Hollybrass is east dropping on them and Zachariah is working on the ship. They are all connected to each other some way and I think I almost know why.Right now I think there connection is that they are looking and interested in the "red robins" I think this because when the captain heard that someone had a red robin he got all mad.I think  a red robin is some kind of clue to a treasure, I know this because I read on p.83 that Zachariah new it was a piece of a map to great treasure.

  1. Yuritizi,

Good set up, you answered all parts of the prompt. I really like how you described the cover of the book and explained how why you think she is happy. I also like how provide a little bit about each character you have met so we know their position in the story. I would love to know if you are write about their connection to each other - what are you thinking!

    Next steps:

Be detailed: you need to explain what you mean in your second paragraph by, "my teacher told me it was on the cover." Does it say on the cover that the book is an adventure, or do you mean the back of the title page or are you using the picture on the cover? What "hook" are you refering to (copy it) and what did it do for you? specifics

Grammar and usuage :through out the response you have grammar/usuage errors. When you talk about finding a character in your book you should use the word "on" when refering to which page you first met the character. Ex: you met the captain on page x not in page x. The characters are in the book but on the page. Make sense?
Also, in your first paragraph, all the info could be in 1 sentence or at least 2. Check our examples. Did you read aloud?

Extra details: To push yourself towards advanced, you could provide examples of why you think she is happy on the cover (not how but why), explain why else you think this is an adventure book - what have you read in the book. And provide more info about the characters and their interactions with each other. Tell us what you think the connections are and how you know.

Grade: 6 PP (the grammar held you back from a 7).

  2. I like you reading response and I think you should add you opinion and add a little bit more description of the book. I also think you should change the background so we can see the words!
